I confess it. I don’t like change. I like doing things the way I’ve always done it because that’s the way I’ve always done it. (Did you follow that?) When Papa the Farmer and I go out for dinner, I always want to go to the same restaurant, order the same meal that I always order, eat at the same table that I always eat at and be served by the same waitress. If “my” waitress is on vacation the food just doesn’t taste as good without her…
I’m also an avid reader. So when I first heard about eReaders a couple of years ago I was absolutely horrified that somebody was marketing a paperless book. The very first words out of my mouth were “Who would want a book that’s not really a book? How do you curl up in bed with a good…. tablet? How on earth can you read an electronic book in the bathtub?!”
I resisted jumping on the ebook bandwagon for a long, long time but eventually the lure of all those free ebooks on Amazon caught up with me and I have to say, I really do like my Kindle now. (As an aside, I like my kindle so much that I upgraded from the basic bare-bones kindle I originally bought to the Kindle DX, which is a lot like the basic Kindle, except that it has a 9.7 inch screen. The larger screen makes it so much easier to read pdf files.)
It’s not unusual to find me curling up in bed with a good ebook these days, but it took me a while to find a way to safely read my ebooks in the bathtub. One day I remembered that when Papa the Farmer and I went canoe-camping several years ago, we put everything that we wanted to keep dry in plastic bags, just in case the canoe tipped over. So I pulled out the gallon size freezer bags and Ta-Da! Even my largest-of-Kindles fits!
Now keep in mind (here’s my disclaimer!), if your tablet-in-a-bag were to tip over in a canoe, it would probably sink to the bottom of the lake and water would seep into the bag and that could be the end of your eReader. And if you were to take the same tablet-in-a-bag and knock it over into the bathtub, there is no absolute guarantee that it won’t get wet (or that you won’t get electrocuted. I’m really not sure.) This is just a way to keep the drips out.
Oh – for those of you who have asked, you can get a pretty bathtub reading caddy just like mine right here.
